I learned so much from books to become who I am today. I know that people with reading habits are the minority. Even though I benefit a lot from reading and understand the importance of it, it is never the priority in comparison with the other activities. In my own experience, I was not able to read books aside from textbooks. I only read during the summer and winter vacation.

From the picture below, we can see that the goal of the course is to “read three books about fish” rather than reading textbooks, writing workbooks, or taking exams. When knowledge is torn apart into several lessons, they become easy to remember but also easy to forget. It works for taking exams but leaves nothing afterward, let alone being useful in the future.

The habit and ability to read are cultivated in such tasks day after day. Although there are no huge blackboards, textbooks, not workbooks in the classroom, the students are able to absorb more necessary skills than in ordinary schools.

I often hear people asking “How do children under experimental education (sometimes indicating Montessori) take exams?” both in Montessori workshops and training and in conversation with my friends. The basic needs of plants include sunshine, air, and water. With the three elements, even wildflowers can grow in the greenhouse. As long as the fire in the children’s minds keeps burning, they are capable to learn well even in ordinary schools.

The syllabus in Taiwan emphasis more and more on reading abilities. But where does it come from? How can the students obtain the “reading abilities” if they only read in the Chinese courses, in the library, or during the morning self-study period?

There are actually a bunch of interesting books in the classroom. Sometimes I would want to sit and read a book and take reading notes like the children. I consider myself fortunate to have reading in my life. Reading really helps me so much. And now I hope that more people can enjoy the beauty of the sea of books.
