I noticed that more people greeted me when I enter the classroom, including students, the foreign teacher whom I did not have many chances to interact with, and the teacher from the other class. There are parents observing the class as well. I become one of the observed. From the first time I came here until now, I could feel myself fitting more into them and started to observe more subtle aspects and fuller interactions.

【Adult’s Mental Preparation】

Adults play a crucial part in this prepared environment. Therefore, every time I am asked questions, I will examine my inner condition and the words I speak to try to make proper answers.

The primary Montessori middle school workshop held by AMI mentioned that there are pitfalls inside the adults’ minds that their negative experiences might be triggered and thus harm the children. The teachers would be upset when the students could not reach their expectations. The teachers ought to have good communication with the children instead of being overwhelmed with anger or sadness. When you are opposed or corrected, the pride in your heart would trigger the self-defense system and you would not be able to carry out the responsibility of a guide.

To present such a situation to occur, as prepared adults, we are to stay humble, observe, discuss, and keep the enthusiasm of learning and life. This sounds easy. However, I noticed that I had a bad habit of answering questions wrongly in the classroom. For instance, when a first-grader asked me if he could write the same word on different paper while doing the writing works, I said yes. The students said, “Really? How do you know?”

I realized that I did not really know but answered anyway. I immediately admitted that I did not know and asked him to clarify with Ms. M. I realized that to answer honestly is not as easy as I imagined and that I would subconsciously refuse to admit what I do not know.

Afterward, when the students asked me if I could pronounce some difficult English words, I would encourage them to ask someone else or said that I do not know (It was true. They know lots of English words I have never learned.). Staying humble, observing, and keeping enthusiasm may seem insignificant, but they are actually very crucial and require conscious practice.
