【Something Every Teacher Would Encounter】
A new Korean student (Kim) came to class yesterday. Some naughty children made fun of the new student’s name. Thus, the teacher gathered everyone during lunchtime to deal with it. Firstly, the teacher figured out the exact details of the incident. Then the teacher told everyone why this was not right and what they ought to do. Finally, the teacher required the children to apologize to the new student and write their reflections in their journals.
The teacher mentioned “three steps to solve problems”:
1. Figure out what happened.
2. Tell others how you feel.
3. Tell others what you wish them to do.
Teacher M also explained the meaning and blessing of Kim’s name. Except for “we should not do it”, the teacher emphasized “why we should not do it” as well. In my elementary school, the teacher would stop the misbehaviors by scolding, telling the students not to do this and that. However, oftentimes the children did not learn to solve problems or incidents by themselves. Thus, they continued to do wrong. Therefore, it is also truly essential to remind everyone what they should do in addition to informing everyone what is not right.
